Looks like she was hit amidships by the bows of the Japanese ship.
Could be all sorts of explanations for this one, steering gear failure is a common one, there is absolutely no chance the two ships didn't see each other
Accidents like this occur every now and again though they are rare

US Navy has a reputation for ignoring sea lanes and maritime right of way, ultimately even a warship needs to comply with the law of tonnage!

These types of collisions happen far more often than you would think in the busy shipping lines.
Spotting these ships isn't the hard bit, it's stopping/moving them in an emergency that can be the issue. Especially if the crew aren't very experienced. Although having said that the route the container ship took before the collision was very odd.

I see the container ships leaving and arriving at Southampton. They are fucking enormous, if you've never seen one however big you think they are, you're wrong, they're bigger.
I was at a restaurant in Shanklin Friday night and looking out there was a couple about 10 miles away offshore and the fuckers still look big.
How they, with the cream of sophisticated electronic detention equipment, couldn't see one 200 yards away is fucking beyond me.
